Performance & ASL Auditions

Calling all Columbia Performers! Audition for the opportunity to perform and/or sign at University Commencement on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Deadline Extended: Submit your audition video by Monday, April 1, 2024, at Noon.

Performance opportunities include the following musical pieces:

The National Anthem: "The Star-Spangled Banner"
Music by John Stafford Smith (1750 - 1836)
Words by Francis Scott Key (1779 - 1843)

"Lift Every Voice and Sing"
Music by John Rosamond Johnson (1873 - 1954)
Words by James Weldon Johnson (1871 - 1938)

"New York State of Mind"
Music and Words by Billy Joel (b. 1949)

*Performers must be a member of the Class of 2024 to be considered for "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing."  All current students are invited to audition for "New York State of Mind" or as an ASL interpreter

 

 


Who can apply?

All current students from all nineteen schools are welcome to audition. Please note, to be considered for the "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing", performers must be a Class of 2024 graduate. However, all current students are invited to audition for "New York State of Mind" or as an ASL interpreter

All applicants must be in good academic standing for consideration.


When is the deadline to submit?

Deadline Extended: Audition submissions are open until Monday, April 1, 2024, at Noon. Winners will be contacted in mid-April.


Can I audition for more than one song?

Yes, to audition for more than one song, you must submit a separate video for each song you wish to be considered for.

ASL interpreters should submit an audition video signing the National Anthem: “Star-Spangled Banner” but can be considered for any of the performances. 

Can I audition for more than one ceremony?

Yes, students are more than welcome to audition for one or both ceremonies. However, this is not a requirement and will not impact your chances in the selection process.


Do I have to perform alone?

No, you do not have to perform as a solo artist. You can audition as a performance group of any size.

Can I create my own rendition of the songs?

Yes, students are more than welcome to create their own rendition for their audition submission. However, this is not a requirement and will not impact your chances in the selection process.


How do I audition?

Deadline Extended: Auditions close on Monday, April 1, 2024, at Noon. Due to time constraints, late submissions may not be accepted.
