Performance Auditions
Calling all Columbia Performers! Audition for the opportunity to perform and/or sign at University Commencement on Wednesday, May 17, 2023.
Performance opportunities include the following musical pieces:
The National Anthem: "The Star-Spangled Banner"
Music by John Stafford Smith (1750 - 1836)
Words by Francis Scott Key (1779 - 1843)
"Lift Every Voice and Sing"
Music by John Rosamond Johnson (1873 - 1954)
Words by James Weldon Johnson (1871 - 1938)
Alma Mater: "Stand, Columbia!"
Music by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809)
Words by Gilbert Ward (1880 - 1944), Columbia College, 1902
"New York State of Mind"
Music and Words by Billy Joel (b. 1949)
Who can apply?
All current students from all nineteen schools are welcome to audition. Please note, to be considered for "The National Anthem" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing", all performers must be a Class of 2023 graduate. However, this does not apply to ASL interpreters that wish to apply.
All applicants must be in good academic standing for consideration.
When is the deadline to submit?
Audition submissions are open until Friday, March 24, 2023. Winners will be contacted on Monday, April 3, 2023.
Can I audition for more than one song?
Yes, to audition for more than one song, you must submit a separate video for each song you wish to be considered for.
ASL interpreters should submit an audition video signing the National Anthem: “Star-Spangled Banner”.
Do I have to perform alone?
No, you do not have to perform as a solo artist. You can audition as a performance group of any size.
Please note, to be considered for "The National Anthem" and/or "Lift Every Voice and Sing", all performers must be a Class of 2023 graduate for consideration.
Can I create my own rendition of the songs?
Yes, students are more than welcome to create their own rendition for their audition submission. However, this is not a requirement and will not impact your chances in the selection process.
How do I audition?
Auditions closed on Friday, March 24, 2023, at Noon. Due to time constraints, late submissions may not be accepted.
