Shawn Edwards

As Bloomberg’s Chief Technology Officer, Shawn Edwards ’90SEAS, ’95SEAS is responsible for setting the company’s technology direction and developing innovative new products. He leads a team of brilliant researchers, technologists, and product managers across diverse domains. Together, they drive ideas from research through prototyping, product development, and large-scale production deployment.

Shawn’s team consists of hands-on researchers who collaborate with Bloomberg's Engineering department, the open-source community, and academia. They focus on strategic areas that are critical for the company’s growth and stability, including AI Strategy and Research, Data and Analytics, Quantitative Financial Research, and Software Infrastructure. The department has led the company's most significant technology changes over the last 18 years.

The CTO Office also acts as product managers of Bloomberg’s most advanced products. This includes AskB, a powerful conversational and agentic AI system that is redefining the Bloomberg Terminal, BQuant, the company’s suite of advanced data science solutions designed specifically for financial markets, and Bloomberg Query Language (BQL), an advanced data and analytics query language. Shawn leads the company’s engagement with the broader developer community and academia through research fellowships, grants, and sponsorships, and oversees Bloomberg’s Open Source Program Office. 

From 2003-2008, Shawn ran Bloomberg’s Infrastructure department and then global Engineering group, where he helped evolve product development, modernize the computer infrastructure, and create a User Experience (UX) design team.

Shawn is regularly recognized as one of the leading technology leaders in the finance industry. 

Shawn is a Chair Emeritus of the Board of Visitors for Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, a member of the Data Science Institute Advisory Council, and a member of the Campbell Center for Entrepreneurship Advisory Council. He serves on the board of Latino U College Access (LUCA), an effective non-profit that empowers high-achieving, low-income, first-generation, Latino youth on their journey to and through college.

Prior to joining Bloomberg in 2003, Shawn worked for Bear Stearns & Co. and also held positions at Mentor Graphics and IBM. Shawn received BS and MS degrees from Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science.
