University Convocation 2024: For Students, By Students

Congratulations to the Class of 2024! Join your fellow graduates for a student-led celebration on Morningside campus to commemorate this milestone together with all eligible graduates across all schools.

Celebration Details

Date: Wednesday, May 15, 2024 (rain or shine)
Time: 10:00 a.m.–⁠1:00 p.m. (gates open at 8:30 a.m.)
Location: Morningside Campus (View Map)
Entrance: Amsterdam and 116th Street (south pedestrian walkway)
Guests: The ceremony is open to eligible graduating students only. Family and friends may join the block party at 120th Street at Amsterdam or Broadway between 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. to partake in the festivities!

There will be music, performances, remarks from students, and a block party with food trucks to follow the ceremony!

Registration & Tickets

All eligible graduates of the Class of 2024 are invited to participate. 

Registering for the student celebration will be the fastest way to enter the festivities. All graduates must have tickets for entry. When applicable, names of graduates on tickets must match your Columbia University Identification (CUID). 

Didn't get to register? Don’t worry! Come to the entrance at Amsterdam and 116th Street with your CUID and we will assist you.

How do I prepare?

Don't leave home without it! Here's how you can prepare:

  • Regalia is required.
  • Ticket saved, loaded, and/or ready to scan.
  • You'll need your Columbia University Identification (CUID).
  • Pre-filled, reusable water bottle.
  • Prepare for inclement weather.
  • Wear comfortable footwear, heels are not recommended.
  • Fully charged phone (and maybe even an external battery).
  • Pack light! Bags, backpacks, and purses larger than 5x7 inches are not permitted. All participants may be subject to bag check at entry.
  • Don't forget your school tchotchkes and inflatables! 

Things to Know

  • Once your ticket is scanned, you'll receive a wristband. Be sure to keep it on throughout the celebration in order to access all the perks!
  • The event will start on Low Plaza and move through upper campus to a street fair on 120th street between Amsterdam and Broadway. There will be food trucks, so come prepared for a treat.
  • You are welcome to take photos while you are on campus until the event ends.
  • Access will be limited and graduates will not be allowed back on campus for the festivities once you exit.

The convocation ceremony from 10:00-11:00 a.m. is for graduates only. However, family and friends can participate in the block party from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. They should enter via 120th Street on Amsterdam or Broadway to be checked in.

    It's important to remember what to bring, but also think about what not to bring. Balloons, sky lanterns, and other celebratory embellishments such as large placards, signs, or flags are not permitted. We hope to work together as a community to reduce waste, avoid potential tree entanglements, and provide an unobstructed and positive experience for all our graduates and guests. 

    *Prohibited items include: outside food or drinks; glass bottles; pets or animals (certified service animals are allowed); clothing deemed obscene or offensive; weapons of any kind, firearms, and knives; laser pointers; pepper spray/mace; lighters or matches; balloons, signs, posters, banners, flyers, or any items that could obstruct the view of guests and graduates; flags or flag posts; amplified sound items and noisemaking devices including cowbells and airhorns; and any item that may interfere with and/or distract graduation speakers and graduates.

    Don't worry, graduates can still bring their school tchotchkes and inflatables! 

    Commencement season is a time to celebrate and enjoy the accomplishments of our graduates. To honor the spirit and significance of this occasion, we do not permit the interruption of speakers or audience disruptions.

    All participants and guests attending Commencement season event(s) understand and agree to follow the responsibilities set forth in University policies, including the Rules of University Conduct and Standards and Discipline. Those found in violation will be asked to discontinue and may be asked to leave the venue.

    Yes! On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, from sunset until 2:00 a.m., the top of New York’s iconic Empire State Building will be lit blue in honor of Columbia University 2024 graduates.

    If so, please pay attention to the details below as you may need to modify your registration.

    You will need to modify your registration if you previously registered for University Commencement and/or the following school ceremonies: Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Columbia School of General Studies, Columbia Law, School, Columbia College, and the School of the Arts.

    1. Select “Already registered?” located under the “Register Now” button.
    2. Enter the email address used at registration and the confirmation number provided in your graduate confirmation email.
